I’ll be honest; I was inspired but didn’t really want to do it. I’m not into extreme diets – I love food too much. Seb on the other hand was pumped and wanted to start ASAP. He won and I am so glad he did.
We optimistically set out on our first 5 day cleanse – I just about managed it eating dinner on the 5th night Seb could’ve gone on for longer but kindly supported me in throwing in the towel a little early. I felt great and horrific at the same time – it was very strange!
Looking back I see that a lot of it was in my head. I hadn’t prepared mentally for what was to come. Yes we had the ingredients and the juicer but I didn’t expect how much mental strength I would need to complete the cleanse.
I am an emotional eater. When I’m sad I eat, when I’m happy I munch away to my heart’s content. I work lots, like most of you, and food becomes a reward – I’m not advocating this, I’m just being honest. It’s something to look forward to after a tough meeting or an intense class. So I missed eating immensely, I wasn’t necessarily hungry I just missed the chew.
My detox symptoms weren’t fun either. I was very lethargic on day 1 and had a pumping headache. I probably should mention I love coffee too which doesn’t help when detoxing! Day 2 & 3 were better but I just couldn’t get food out of my mind!
We got through 5 days and many more cleanses since then. Seb attributes a lot of his 12kg weight loss to juicing. It was his “aha moment”.

Juicing gave him was a MASSIVE kick start, a slight shift on the scales, a loser belt and most importantly the confidence to go further – this is really common among cleansers.
Juicing is not a diet or a weight loss gimmick – it is part of a healthy lifestyle.
I am not into fad diets; I don’t believe in them and find that the diet mind set can be dangerous and miserable.
So why do I juice?
Juicing is a great kick start. If you feel like you are in a rut, not getting enough fresh food, drinking too much caffeine and feeling bloated then juicing could be your answer. It creates a clean slate for you to work from and build on.
Juicing on only fresh fruit and vegetables gives your body rest from processing; it helps support the organs that detox the body so well. We are constantly feeding our bodies with processed foods, which are loaded with god only knows what, and asking so much of our internal organs. Our wonderful bodies take such a battering at times and I feel juicing is a real rest and reboot for the cells, organs and digestive system – a full body boost!
I get into bad habits like everyone and when I juice it resets everything for me. I can return to my healthy, food filled life with a cleaner, more balanced approach. My bad habits are less, I realise I don’t need 2/3 cups of coffee a day. I can survive three days without a chocolate treat or two that I was convinced I NEEEEDED. You see what your body can survive on, the food needed to live and how simple, raw food can help you really thrive. It’s a massive wakeup call!
When we juice we don’t eat or drink refined sugar or caffeine which can be difficult, but it is so worth it. You can’t imagine how well you sleep while juicing – it’s INCREDIBLE! Sleep is so deep, so restful – just like a baby!
ENERGY & WELL BEING
The fresh, raw fruit and vegetables consumed fill your body with an abundance of vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytonutrients and antioxidants. These work to improve the function of internal organs as well as the body’s use of oxygen so your body and brain are energized.
Every cell is nourished helping to prevent disease and flush the system of waste. I’m not sure what effect all of the toxins I have and consumed and continue to consume- albeit in moderation – will l have on my body, so I want to replenish my body as much as I can, nourish my organs and cells as best I can.
I’ll be honest, I don’t love juicing and I find it tough. But I keep going back time and time again. I do this because I experience the benefits I’ve mentioned above, every single time I juice.
If a full cleanse is something you can’t even contemplate why not start with a juice a day or even 2-3 a week to begin with?
Be careful of your sugar intake. Fruit contains natural sugars but they are sugars after all so go easy on the fruit. I start every day with either of these green juices;
Ginger Shot – YUM
HUGE chunk of ginger and 1 golden delicious apple (serves two)
Green Supreme – Not as YUM but SOOO good for you! So just suck it up, down the hatch!
Handful of spinach leaves, 1 apple, chunk of ginger, ¼ cucumber, thumb sided chunk of celery and a squeeze of lime.
